  3.     Ascii is the last state for entering text. In the Ascii state 
  4.    any printable Ascii character can be entered. The Ascii state, like
  5.    the katakan state, is invoked either with the F3 key or with a Ascii 
  6.    flag, the Ascii flag. The Ascii flag is the tilde character ("~") and
  7.    is used in the same manner as the katakana flag.

  14.    Since the "~" and "|" characters are special control characters they
  15.   cannot be entered normally. To enter these two characters precede them
  16.   with the backslash ("\") character. The backslash will escape the 
  17.   normal meaning of these characters. Using the backslash with any other
  18.   character will enter the backslash and that character.
